Changing Edit Summaries?

[edit]

Is it possible to change an Edit summary in the article page history? I just made a change to the Hitler page, and in the edit summary, I wrote "mother" when I meant "paternal grandmother". I know its trivial, and the edit itself was correct, just the edit summary was wrong, but is there a way to change it anyway? ChessPlayer 17:38, 19 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

It's intended to be difficult to go back and change the history. Just make a trivial edit (eg add a few spaces), and add a note to this effect -- The Anome 19:32, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Moving of Whip

[edit]

Hi. Could you explain why did you move Whip to Whip (politics)? I can see any reason for that (except lots of links needed to fixed). Przepla 18:52, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

The primary meaning of whip is a thing you hit people or animals with. Whip (politics) is a secondary meaning, just like whip antenna. Currently, almost all of the links to "whip" are for the political meaning. Just wait a bit, and someone will come round with a semi-automatic link-fixing bot and sort the links out. It's all for the best, for the future when we have a better disambiguation feature added, and right now all the links go to the right place via the redirect. -- The Anome 19:30, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
I see. So after such link fixing we will move Whip (implement) to Whip? Thanks for clarification. Przepla 10:01, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, with references to the other secondary meanings (whip-like antennae, people who "whip" other politicians into line, etc.) in that article, so we will no longer need a separate disambiguation page. -- The Anome 10:05, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish symbols

[edit]

Hey, I just noticed you created this, Jewish symbols. This page is going to be a major lightning rod, like any article about Jews. Got any stratgies for keeping it (relatively) NPOV? Burgundavia 09:21, 24 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I've discovered that we already have a much better article, Jewish symbolism, and so I've turned it into a redirect to that. There is a big fuss in Talk:Jew from someone who believes that the Star of David is offensive to some Jews, but will not be specific -- I'm trying to direct an argument about symbols into an article about symbols. Hopefully if the contributor will be specific, and has a valid point, we may learn something. -- The Anome 09:27, 24 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Having just read his comments, it appears that is probably little likelyhood of reformation (or actual effort), he just wants to gripe. Meanwhile, the rest of us get on with the task of writing an encyclopedia. Burgundavia 09:37, 24 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

The Anome, we were in the middle of a discussion about what was the best way to move the article and preserve the point when you preemtively redirected it. Please at least read the talk page and comment there before changing an article to a redirect. Thanks. - Taxman 15:14, May 28, 2004 (UTC)

My apologies. I didn't see your discussion. -- The Anome 15:17, 28 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, no big deal I guess. I'm not sure there really needs to be a separate page about operating systems that have met CC certification anyway. - Taxman 15:39, May 28, 2004 (UTC)

How about this: "some operating systems meet certain evaluation criteria: they can be described as security-evaluated operating systems; but this as such does not make them secure." -- The Anome 15:56, 28 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Onion juice

[edit]

Way back in 2002 you wrote in fish and chips that they were served with vinegar or onion juice. I'm sure you're right, but in my travels I have never seen them served with onion juice. Do you know if this practice is restricted to a particular part of the UK, or do you know it to be widespread? Thanks. -- Heron 22:05, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I can't speak for all of the UK, but this certainly seems to be the case in most chip shops in London. -- The Anome 22:25, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
My local fish & chip shop gives the choice of "onion vinegar", which may be the same thing as you're calling "onion juice". It is in fact the left-over vinegar from the large jars of pickled onions that they also sell individually, and has a distinctive taste. I can't imagine that the juice from raw onions would actually be very nice at all! I prefer onion vinegar to plain vinegar, so I always ask for it, but unfortunately it is not universal. There are only two other fish & chip shops in South London that I know of that do it - most don't. I'd therefore say that it is a rarety, but an epicurean delight for those who appreciate tasty fish and chips, and a useful small cost saving for the shopkeeper! Matt Stan 17:13, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Just as a little note, I'm in the process of moving the "wacky User:tmxxine guys" (we're actually approximately half girls, but oh well) over to blogspot as I think it is a more appropriate forum for what we are trying to do. Undeletion request

[edit]

Need support on an undelete. Talk:Nazism/Seperate-National Socialism I would like your support to undelete this and restore as a proper standing article. Some content was moved to the Nazism article and has been made a redirect. The Nazi article is too long. *National Socialism* was not created by either Mussolini nor Hitler and the history of its development needs to have a seperate article upon it. Please see Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion.WHEELER 18:47, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit]

Why do you say that green is surely not the most common eye color for redheads. Please give me some proof on this at my talk page and tell me what the most common eye color you think is. User:Heegoop, 26 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Please see my reply on your talk page, and on Talk:red hair. -- The Anome 00:11, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Renaming and VfD history

[edit]

Thank you for the disambiguation of Spreadeagle, and for moving everything to the appropriate namespaces. One thing I was curious about -- since the text that is now at Spreadeagle (position) survived VfD under the name of Spreadeagle, should the VfD history be moved with it, maybe with a note explaining the name change? I've not run across this situation before. I'm hoping you can fill me in. Thank you. SWAdair | Talk 23:50, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Yes it should. I'll move it. -- The Anome 23:58, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Subud or SUBUD?

[edit]

Is it appropriate to get a message to you like this? I clicked on "emial this user" but got a "no email address" message. I see you're active on these matters, and I have a question: Is SUBUD an acronym or an anacronym? I would argue it's still an acronym, because SUBUD has about 12,000 members worldwide, and I'm quite sure that 100% of them could vocalize that SUBUD stands for "Susila Buddhi Dharma." If this is the case, then aren't acronyms, in general, capitalized? If so, then the title of this article is wrong. It's "Subud" and it should be "SUBUD." Does this mean that the page has to be "moved?" I'm new here, so I don't want to muck around too much. Please advise. Aloha, Aliman 06:52, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC) Aliman 01:02, 27 Jul 2004 (UTC)

In general, acronyms are capitalised. However, Subud appears to be a special case. A google search for "subud" shows that the common case in official Subud sites is to treat the word as a proper noun, not an acronym, whilst acknowledging its origins as an acronym. See in particular http://www.subud.org/english/english.Btalk.html . Based on this evidence, I see no reason to move the page, but I've created a redirect from SUBUD to the Subud article to help with the less-common capitalization. -- The Anome 08:39, 27 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for doing that (the redirect). This will be fine. I must also say, being in Subud for 18 years, that I'm quite sure that nobody in Subud carefully thought through this issue and began representing the name in a deliberate way based on that careful thinking through. However, like legally changing a name by the "useage" method, we'll just have to go with what's been done in the past. (P.S.: If I send a note to someone like I did you, I'm supposed to check their "User:Talk" page for a response?) Mahalo. Aliman 18:03, 27 Jul 2004 (UTC)
What I tend to do is to reply here, and drop them a note on their own page that a reply is waiting for them. You can also use the "watchlist" feature to automatically watch any page you want. -- The Anome 21:44, 27 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Starvation economy

[edit]

I'm curious as to why you removed my 'starvation economy' reference from the polyamory page. It's certainly not essential to the article, but as a fairly commonly-used name for that particular argument I thought it was relevant enough to merit inclusion.

If that's the case, please put it back. However, I'm unsure of the wisdom of linking the words "starvation economy" in the polyamory article, as the term is used figuratively and has nothing to do with real starvation. -- The Anome 08:52, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Hence, "This is sometimes referred to as..." But I'll try to make it a little clearer this time around. - Calair
The anthro term "starvation economy" probably deserves a wikidef or article. --Joe Decker 16:36, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Laser star hypothesis

[edit]

Take a look at who the creator of that page was... perhaps the name will ring a bell. Nothing links to it, I think we can just let it sit there. It shouldn't be incorporated into a mainstream article. -- Curps 17:13, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

3753 Cruithne

[edit]

Re: Earth-crosser asteroid, stating that 3753 Cruithne's orbit is « "locked" to the Earth's » is probably going too far. It is one of those horsehoe orbit arrangements --3753 Cruithne has nearly the same period as Earth, so it slowly drifts with regard to Earth (i.e., it has a large synodic period). Being eccentric, it describes a kidney-bean-shaped loop during every Earth year, and the bean drifts until it approaches Earth (every few centuries, if I remember correctly), at which point an exchange of angular momentum is undergone between the two bodies which sends 3753 Cruithne's relative motion going the other way. Now, to my point: 1) Because 3753 Cruithne crosses Venus' orbit, it is just a matter of time before Venus sends it on a different orbit altogether. 2) A large synodic period is not the same as a resonant lock. 3) There is nothing in the Earth-3753 Cruithne relation that dictates the specific orbit; you can freely change 3753 Cruithne's eccentricity (for example) and it won't matter one way or another --again, no lock.

I guess I'm hung up on the term "lock"...

Urhixidur 02:41, 2004 Aug 1 (UTC)

Perhaps "entrained" is a better word? It's the momentum exchange that I'm thinking of as the entraining process. Or maybe I'm using completely inappropriate language, in which case please correct my edit to something more sensible. -- The Anome 14:35, 1 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Can you remove Avigad Berman form the speedy deletion category

[edit]

i see no reason to delete him, why did you put him there?

The creation of the article is controversial, and a number of things seem wrong with it. Most notably: how can there be a photograph of a fictious person? At the same time, there does not seem any reason for this person/character to be included in an encyclopedia. -- The Anome 17:27, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Accodring to IMDb, the Alien Vs. Predator movie has capital Vs. in the title. Ausir 10:49, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

On the official movie website [1], the name is either rendered "Alien vs. Predator" or in all caps as "ALIEN VS. PREDATOR", used on the movie poster (but all-caps is common on movie posters). I assume that the latter is simply the former transformed to all-caps. See the HTML title of the entry page, or text on http://www.avp-movie.com/us/html/homepage.html -- The Anome 10:56, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Seems like they're inconsistant even on their own webpage, as the "vote now" popup uses "Alien Vs. Predator" HTML title. Ausir 11:03, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I see you're putting the epidemiology articles into nice maths (a skill I haven't acquired yet). Thanks! But if you do mind, I'll do it myself, later.

Removal of the stuffed toy image from Tin-foil hat

[edit]

Can you please explain why you removed the stuffed toy image from Tin-foil hat? What problems does this image cause for people? Thanks. -- (an anonymous contributor)

Tin-foil hats are a deadly serious issue for those paranoid individuals who wear them; many of them are sufferers from schizophrenia, a severe mental illness. This is a serious subject, and cuddly toy illustrations are not appropriate. We can, and should, report on the mockery of the wearers of tin-foil hats that is the most common meme regarding them -- we should not, however, take part in it. -- The Anome 12:06, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Terminal Velocity of a droplet

[edit]

Hi, Thank you for answering my question about how fast a raindrop falls. May I ask how you came across it?

Well, I know that the rain drops were going to be falling at their terminal velocity, but I didn't know how fast that was. So I converted that thought into a Google search by eliminating all but the most important keywords: "rain drop terminal velocity", and read the articles that came up. After checking that they all seem to give answers that roughly agreed with one another, I chose the one that seemed to give the clearest description of the phenomenon. Perhaps we need a page Wikipedia:Googling tips for how to select good search keywords. -- The Anome 12:54, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer. Your reply is more about how to do a google search. I appreciate that. My question was more about how you found my question ;)

Editing conflict?

[edit]

Hi, I noticed we are working on the same article, Enfleurage, I was wondering if you are writing either supercritical or Supercritical fluid extraction at this time? (if not, I'll take a crack at it overnight) Also noticed you changed the category Perfume to Perfumery... would you think it might be a good idea to put "Perfume" in as a sub-category to perfumery? I'm still a little shaky on accepted categorization principles here on Wikipedia. Also, any other perfume/essential oils articles you are going to write? Or any suggestions for any you'd like written?. Nice to meet you.Pedant 22:04, 2004 Oct 28 (UTC)

No, I was just doodling about adding categories and doing slight copyedits. You know much more than I do about this topic. Please go ahead.

I believe that the best rules for categories is that they should either be

  • the name of a field of study, if the category members all fall under that field of study, or
  • a plural noun or noun phrase, if they are members of a class of objects that can be described as such.

So, examples of good category names are:

  • by the first rule, "Physics", "Topos theory" and
  • "Countries", "Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom", "Medical tests" by the second rule.

It is also useful to look at an existing similar article, and see what categories it belongs to. I hope this helps. -- The Anome 22:13, Oct 28, 2004 (UTC)

In general, the community tends to support well-behaved users who can give citable, verifiable evidence for their views over those users who engage in edit wars.
My advice to both you and Chuck F is to try to cool down over this issue, and chill out a bit: see Wikipedia:Wikilove for more guidelines. -- The Anome 14:49, Nov 8, 2004 (UTC)
All of that has been tried and failed. Chuck F is already the subject of a Request For Comment and he is also under a Request For Arbitration. I think he is actually starting to learn to compromise, but only because I have forced him to. I wish there had been another way. 195.92.67.71 15:23, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

A reply

[edit]

sorry, i won't vandalize any more.

but i wasn't the one who put the inappropriate picture on the sandbox. someone else did that.

i like wikipedia a lot, so i don't want to be banned.

am i allowed to express angry but not overly inappropriate political feelings on the sandbox?

and sorry for putting a messagge on the wrong page.

Dear Anon, thanks for your reply. Wikipedia is a project to build an encyclopedia. Thus, the only thing we should do with political views is report on them. There are plenty of other Wikis where expressing your political views is on-topic: why not try one of them? -- The Anome 00:43, Nov 9, 2004 (UTC)

sry about the pic size. I wasn't aware that there was a regulation! Does it apply to all pics, or just album covers etc? -- Martin TB 18:11, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

  • er, well... "regulation" was a bit of a joke/exaggeration on my part, but there is a guideline that images should be 225px wide, unless there's some special reason. It's only a guideline though. -- The Anome 18:12, Nov 11, 2004 (UTC)
  • :D I had realised that there was a convention for Album covers, and to be honest the 300 for the Kate Bush page was a bit large, but I'm biased as she's one of my all time favourite singers. Martin TB 20:17, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)
