You down with OPP? Yeah you know me..

I've never understood what that song was talking about... Is it sex within family members?

Listen closely to the lyrics... it's pretty clear. ;) They even spell it for you... it's 5 letters. Gabe 06:02, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Redirect

[edit]

O.P.P. shouldn't redirect straight here. It's frequently used to refer to the Naughty by Nature song. It should take you to the OPP disambiguation page, as just searching OPP without the periods does. User:BBonds 11:04, 24 Jan 2009 (UTC)

Image placement

[edit]

Is there anywhere to stick the police cruiser image without the article looking too ugly? I moved it from the top (because the article text was squished between template and image) but I still don't like where it is. - Lucky13pjn 05:26, August 4, 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure either. That big ugly infobox on the right is screwing up the optics of this image. I have a potential place for the image on my sandbox, but I'm not sure it's the idea place for it either. Take a look at User:Deathphoenix/Sandbox and tell me what you think. Feel free to move the image around, after all, it's a sandbox! --Deathphoenix 15:01, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Although I am still not sure where to place the image, the changes I made to your sandbox might open up new placement options. - Lucky13pjn 23:12, August 7, 2005 (UTC)

Sgt. Pepper info

[edit]

Yes, the article is correct in stating that the badge was an OPP badge, but I think the notion that the album Sgt. Pepper was named after an OPP seargent is completely false.

  • It would be a good idea to keep a mention of it in here, just in case anybody would like to try and verify/discredit that for whatever reason. I agree though, in that it doesn't belong on the main page. Also, I'd like to see the "Beatles folklore" section and the "Other Pop Culture" section merged into one "OPP in pop culture" section.

Naughty by Nature lyrics

[edit]

Is there a source for the claim that lots of people belived the "O.P.P" in the song stood for the Ontario Provincial Police? If there's no source, I don't think that section needs to be in here. Joyous | Talk 22:57, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed that section, as it was totally unsourced. Joyous | Talk 02:22, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It came back, so I removed it again. Blotto adrift 22:10, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Population served

[edit]

Could someone clarify the statement about the population served by the OPP being 2.3 million to 3.6 million? The population of its Greater Toronto Region alone is greater than that, and the populations outside it is over 8 million. I realize I'm missing something, but it needs to be spelled out. John FitzGerald 00:06, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are 12.5 million citizen-taxpayers of Ontario are failed by the OPP each and everyday by the denial of our right is common.

Yeah, while the OPP aren't active in Toronto, Hamilton and other large cities they do have jurisdiction to execute all the responsibilities of local police. So in reality, they serve all 12.5 million Ontarians.

Caledonia

[edit]

I took out the sentence "Most people on both sides of the 2006 conflict in Caledonia have sighted the consistent failure of the OPP to serve or protect the interests or safety of Canadians" as it's a biased, unsourced piece of opinion.

Its not 'just oppinion' I've updated with some FACTs if you'd like that better? or are you in Denial trying to take our Citizen-Taxpayer rights to even question/improve our society?

Caledonia should definitely be mentioned; it is a significant issue, and despite government documents quite clearly calling for OPP action, they have not performed their duty as officers. This issue needs to be mentioned under a "criticisms" section. Furthermore, any police department for millions of people will likely have enough criticism to warrant a "criticism" section. This page isn't to make the OPP look good or bad, but simply relate information, and inform those reading it where they can acquire further data should they wish. To that end, I have added a link to the Caledonia_land_dispute in the main article under the "See Also" section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.151.188.146 (talk) 09:22, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To those who keep editing this page to remove the reference to the Caledonia Land Dispute: Please discuss and reach a proper conclusion here before you remove the reference. You are not the only one with a viewpoint, nor am I. What is important is that all relevant non-biased information is presented, and four years of rioting with the OPP jurisdiction, as well as the latest revelations in court on the issue make the Caledonia land dispute important and relevant to understanding the OPP and how effective they are in being a police force. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.128.44.207 (talk) 22:06, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OPP vs RCMP

[edit]

As an outsider, I don't get from this article where OPP jurisdiction and RCMP jurisdiction differ. I didnt even know that the RCMP had forces in Ontario because I thought the OPP had supremacy over the province. Does each town decide if they want the OPP or the RCMP or a local city police force? I think there should be some mention in this article about where the OPP has control vs. the RCMP. --Mezaco (talk) 21:09, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RCMP act as provincial police forces in provinces outside Ontario and Quebec. Their authority to act as a provincial police force is derived from agreements entered into between the provincial and federal governments. Since Ontario has its own force, and has no agreement with the federal government, the RCMP does not and cannot provide general policing services in Ontario. A municipality in Ontario cannot elect to have the RCMP provide it with general policing services. RCMP is active in Ontario, but limited to enforcing non-criminal federal statutes. I don't think it's necessary to add this information though in an article about the OPP. If it's not there already, it might belong in a "policing in Canada" entry. 68.149.187.20 (talk) 15:57, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
