Comment
[edit]Is this where the EU institutions are? -- Kaihsu 20:10, 2004 Jun 29 (UTC)
- No, I think the main EU buildings are on the territory of Etterbeek, City of Brussels or Schaerbeek municipalities (but I am not 100% sure). --Edcolins 21:23, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)
Why is it on Wiki EN named after the frech name instead of the dutch ? I believe the ductch name is the original, the french is only a translation.
- True, the Brussels region is in Flanders, the dutchspeaking part of Belgium. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.226.124.112 (talk) 19:08, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
Requested move
[edit]This page has been proposed as one for a block move on WP:RM. See Talk:Brussels-Capital Region: Ixelles → Ixelles - Elsene. --Philip Baird Shearer 14:23, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that this page should be moved to Ixelles - Elsene for NPOV reasons Travelbird 19:03, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Moved back to Ixelles
[edit]The move to back to Ixelles, is in my eyes a very much POV move, this community is located in a bilingual area, and has no English name. Putting the article under the French name is as much as saying it's a French Speaking area. Henna 19:11, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
I disagree. The French names are the only ones in actual usage in English-speaking circles in Brussels. Adding the Dutch names to the EN version of Wikipedia is as much as saying the Dutch names are actually used in English which they are not. An encyclopedia's job is to be descriptive not didactic.
I agree to mentioning the legal reality, that officially the locality is bilingual, and mentioning what the local names are for it. I just don't believe in using the Dutch names in the title. The English name for the area is Ixelles.
I suppose it makes sense... I'm a speaker of french/dutch/english and neither the french nor the dutch call Antwerp, Antwerp. Only the English call it that. So for an English language article, use whatever the English call it. 21stcenturypolitix (talk) 17:39, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
Naming survey
[edit]A naming survey for this article (among others) has started at Talk:Brussels-Capital Region#Names survey. Markussep 11:44, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
The preliminary result of the survey is that this article will be moved to Ixelles, since this name is predominantly used in English language texts. For details see Talk:Brussels-Capital Region#Names survey. If you would like to comment, please do so at Talk:Brussels-Capital Region#Discussion and conclusion. Markussep 16:18, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
Names survey, result
[edit]Between 23 December 2006 and 28 January 2007 there has been a survey about which names the articles for the municipalities in the Brussels region should have. The municipalities in question have different names in French and Dutch, the two official languages of the region. A majority of contributors to the survey prefers using one single same over using both names in the title. This single name should follow English usage, which has been determined using domain specific Google searches.
The final result of the survey is that:
- for the following municipalities the French name has been chosen, in line with the most commonly used names in English:
- for the following municipalities no significant preference in the English language has been found. After discussion, the Dutch names have been chosen:
Details about the survey can be found at Talk:Brussels-Capital Region/NamingArchive3. Markussep 18:34, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
1st line
[edit]Sorry, nothing to do with any language preferences, but where the article name is already decided, this should be the 1st on the order of the 1st line. All respect to the Vlams name and history (I used to live happily in Zaventem), but it just looks illogical and wrong to have inconsistencies between the article name and Introduction. I think Talk:Brussels-Capital Region/NamingArchive3 applies here also. --83.170.113.250 (talk) 09:04, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Matongé (?)
[edit]I may be wrong - but isn't "Matongé" spelled Matonge, even though it is prononced phonetically more like the former? If you note the title of the french language article is Matonge... ---(Brigade Piron (talk) 18:02, 5 October 2012 (UTC)).
I think they are used interchangeably, however official signage (bus stops, Naamsepoort metro etc.) typically use Matongé, with the acute accent. 21stcenturypolitix (talk) 17:35, 22 May 2013 (UTC)
