from Wikipedia:Help desk

Some time back I submitted an article to Wikipedia on V.A. Sukhomlinsky, using text from my own posted web pages at http://members.optusnet.com.au/~achcockerill/. To my knowledge I am the only English language writer to have published a study of Sukhomlinsky, and it is based on the thesis for which I was awarded my Ph.D.. My book has been well reviewed but not widely circulated (hence my web pages and my attempt to contribute to Wikipedia).

Someone has found that my article shares text with my web pages and has suspected a breach of copyright. I can assure you that both the text of the article and the text of the web pages are my own, and also that they are substantially different from the text of my book, (which is subject to copyright). The publishers of my book (which appeared in 1999) were very happy to see it promoted through my web site, and I am sure they would have no objection to my contributing an article to Wikipedia.

Yours sincerely,

Alan Cockerill e-mail: acockeri@bigpond.net.au

I replied to Alan, suggesting he take this up on Wikipedia:Copyright problems - but it wasn't listed there (Alan's message above dates from a month after his original submission). So things have plainly fallen between the cracks, and in the interests of m:Avoid Copyright Paranoia I've restored it. I'll send Alan an email too. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 11:02, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Suggestions

[edit]

Some suggestions that would make the article more "wikipedia"-ish:

  • we usually give someone's full name (not just their initials)
  • it's good to know their place of birth and death, and other biographical details (family, education, cause of death)
  • I'm entirely unfamiliar with the subject field, but I doubt the wikipedia as a whole is. If the article isn't sensibly linked from other articles then it's essentially useless (no-one will ever find it). So it's a good idea for someone who does know the domain to walk around in the wikipedia article space and add links here
  • The ISBN of your book would be a useful addition (we'll add a "references" section, citing it and your website

This isn't an article

[edit]

No offence to the author, but this isn't an article, it's a fuzzy hagiography. I'm tempted to VFD it, frankly - there's no information here, just assertions that Sukhomlinsky was a wonderful human being who did wonderful things. When? Where? What has happened since? What happened before? - DavidWBrooks 17:34, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
