Graeme Garden as a doctor
[edit]Re Garden being a doctor - I found a BBC link that says he is - and you HAVE to trust the BBC :) [1]
- Graeme Garden studied medicine at Emmanuel College at the University of Cambridge, as well as at King's College Hospital in London. He received his medical degree in 1967.
- He was studying medicine during the early seasons of "I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again", and so was unable to be a member of the cast during the third season because of a midwifery medical course in Plymouth. However, he kept on sending scripts for the radio show by mail - and rejoined the cast of ISIRTA upon his return to his medical studies in London.
- His medical studies held him in good stead for his co-writing (with Bill Oddie) of some of the episodes of "Doctor in the House (TV series)", as he was able to base the medical information of the episodes on his own experiences as a medical student. On a note of trivia, Graeme and Bill wrote most of the episodes for the first season of the series and all of the episodes for the second season. Figaro 04:17, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
new comment
[edit]I've taken this from the Graeme Garden page. It's pretty POV, but maybe it could be filtered...
"The intelligent yet wholesome style of 'The Goodies disappeared from TV screens in the 1970s and 1980s to be revived later in the 20th century by artists such as Harry Enfield and Harry Hill. A strident critic of the way in which most British TV comedy lost touch with family audiences is the comic actor and co-writer of many Goon Shows Eric Sykes who established a less threatening comedy style, particularly in partnership with Carry On actress Hattie Jacques. "
Not sure there's a lot left if you filter it, but I didn't want to erase it from the universe altogether. -Nommo
theme song question
[edit]Was the theme song; 'Goodies, goodie goodie yum yum' or 'Goodies, goodie goodie gumdrop'?
- "yum yum", not "gumdrop".--Drat (Talk) 05:26, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- Don't edit other people's comments --Paul 08:36, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry, I must have started my edit session before you did, and been distracted by something for a few minutes. My edit overwrote yours.--Drat (Talk) 09:03, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
- actually, I'm pretty sure that it is being sung by two or more people. One (or more) sings "gumdrop" while another (or more) sings "yum yum", at the same time. When I was a kid I thought they were singing "goodie goodie gum yum" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.12.24.129 (talk) 03:25, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Goodies userbox
[edit]Created this for fellow fans, add {{User:UBX/Goodies}} to your user page.--Drat (Talk) 03:26, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
- Not to be pedantic, but it's "Goody, goody, yum, yum"? Also if anyone has photos of the recent Australian tours, it would make a great addition to this page. Citizen D 22:11, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
- I've fixed the template. As for the other suggestion, I'm not sure how you would create such an image short of drawing it from scratch, as Fair Use doesn't apply on userpages. Even so, drawing something too similar could be considered copyvio.--Drat (Talk) 13:17, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
The Goodies (TV series) article has been created especially for the television series, in a similar way to the article for Monty Python's Flying Circus television series is separate to the article for the Monty Python team.
I have transferred some information concerning the television series from the main article page for The Goodies to the television article, but, unfortunately, the credits for the people who wrote the transferred sections could not be transferred with the information they supplied. The acknowledgements and credits for their edits and donations of information will, however, continue to remain in connection with the main article.
I hope that this is okay. Figaro 12:00, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- I have included episode titles for The Goodies television series on the TV series page, and have started writing, in conjuunction with this, plot summaries for some of the episodes — 12 episodes so far). Figaro 12:11, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
Chief Inspector Nancy Bottle
[edit]Does anybody have any info about a (?unseen?) character named 'Chief Inspector Nancy Bottle'? (?a male?)
I think the Goodies told some jokes about Nancy Bottle in their TV series.
And I distinctly remember one of the Goodies' books had a humerous psychological/intelligence questionaire that showed a diagram of several drawings and asked, "Who is the odd man out?" The hand-scrawled answer was "Chief Inspector Nancy Bottle".
72.82.166.123 16:57, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Cheif Inspector George 'Nancy' Bottle was a character in The Goodies File. The storyline goes that a policeman, PC Bent, with the aid of the Goodies' sacked cleaner Mrs Edna Tole, are trying to discredit The Goodies so they can make a lot of money selling the story. 'Nancy' is PC Bent's superior officer. More details to follow when I find the book... Jodievdw 11:47, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- More details now that I've found the book... Bottle was a character in The Goodies File (1975, ISBN 0 7221 1877 5). 72.82.166.123's description of the 'odd man out' test is spot on. Later in the book he gets a congratulatiory letter from the commissioner of police 1. congratulating him on 'nailing the East Acton Tuesday Sewing Circle and Terrorist Club' 2. congratulating him on winning a ballroom dancing competition and 3. telling him to stop Bent's ingestivation into the Goodies. I don't think he turned up in the TV series. Jodievdw 06:46, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Over-use of fair use images
[edit]The claim to fair use for covers, screenshots and the like hinges on the assertion that the images are required to illustrate the article about the image subject. When we over-use images (such as displaying every DVD cover), that harms the fair use claim. To that end, please consider carefully what images to use, and where. Wikipedia is not a still-life you-tube. See WP:FAIR for more detail. -Harmil 16:07, 30 September 2006 (UTC)
Links
[edit]Why are there links to a few old interviews with the cast, yet a far more relevant link to the new site established to support the Goodies UK tour keeps disappearing? 144.138.31.213 06:10, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- The links for the Goodie UK tour are still there — numbers 12 and 13 in the References section. Figaro 06:38, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Speaking of links, is that list due for a tidy-up and clear-out? Some of the stuff there seems kind of random. And old. 203.2.218.145 05:04, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
: I'll take a look at them if nobody else wants to. Does Wikipedia have a policy on linking from articles like this one to fan sites? I see there's a couple there, and not sure what criteria we use to decide which. And ditto media articles. (I'm sorry, I'm kinda new here and still finding my way around.) Jodievdw 22:45, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, since I made that offer I realised I've got a conflict of interest, since I'm fairly involved with a couple of the sites in question. So I'll shut up and sit down. By they way, I work with the person who posted as 203.2.218.145 (which is why it shows up occasionally as my own IP address... my bad for using wikipedia at work!) and they say they don't really feel that strongly about the links needing an overhaul. Apologies again. Jodievdw 06:46, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Mary Whitehouse
[edit]Should mention not be made of the fact that Mary Whitehouse publicly stated she liked the show, which ruined it's ratings. Jrl101 (talk) 20:03, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
- I can find no evidence of such an endorsement from Whitehouse. However, on the mary Whitehouse page, it states that the team actively included more smut in an attempt to avoid such an endorsement, and in fact made it a goal to get a complaint from her. This seems like information appropriate to this article? --.../Nemo (talk) 05:10, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- Only if it's sourced to external, reliable sources, that are not themselves sourced from Wikipedia.--Drat (Talk) 02:33, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
- Fair call, in which case it should be so noted as citatiomn required, or removed, from the Mary Whitehouse page also. yes? --.../Nemo (talk) 05:45, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
- Indeed. A tag is probably best, as the info is probably out there.--Drat (Talk) 09:21, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

- One of the problems with citing Mary is that much of her criticism was verbal in nature (as this one was) so the NVLA (Mediawatch UK) don't record or offer cites for any such comment. MartinSFSA (talk) 11:36, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Didn't the cast members themselves claim this during the 2005 documentary "The Return Of The Goodies" ?
( On learning they had the Mary Whitehouse seal of approval, they vowed to get into her bad books, eventually drawing her fire for a sketch involving Tim Brooke-Taylor wearing a pair of underpants with a picture of a large carrot adorning the front... or so they claimed... )
86.25.122.26 (talk) 20:14, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
- The cast members also commented on this fact during their 2005 Australian stage appearance on "The Goodies (Still A) Live on Stage". Figaro (talk) 14:06, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
Australian broadcasts
[edit]I recall the Goodies slot from 1979 was 18.00 nationally; if anyone has better info on earlier screenings or regional variants then please append. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MartinSFSA (talk • contribs) 11:39, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

TV series
[edit]The following should be relocated to the The Goodies (TV series) article:
- The bulk of the "The Goodies television series" section;
- The "Fatal effect" section;
- The "Foetal effect" section.
All of these relate to the TV show specifically, not the group generally, and therefore belong there, not here. —sroc (talk) 14:09, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
