- 1859 – The Chicago and North Western Railway is chartered.
- 2000 – The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (pictured), originally built for rail traffic in 1943, opens for combined rail/highway traffic, making it the longest combined rail/highway tunnel in North America.
- 2001 – SNCF opens a station in Avignon, France, on the Meditrranean TGV line.
