Beards
[edit]In general, I like Dahl's sense of humor and educational approach. It is unfortunate that he chose, with 'The Twits,' to reinforce the general prejudice against beards promulgated by tv & Hollywood. A white beard is ok if associated with a large belly, but otherwise beards are villainized as a shorthand to establish in 30 minutes which is the bad side, similar to the old horse-opera shorthand: white hat = hero, black hat = villain, derived from medieval and even pre-Christian symbolism, but unfortunately related to black slavery/ racism. As beards have come back into fashion, the subliminal television programming loses some of its effect, but this slippery slope were better avoided. rags (talk) 19:54, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
