I dont believe that the Norris Trophy for 200 has been handed out yet (June I think). And I definately dont think it'll be Aki Berg.
Question about the inscription
[edit]Does the inscription on this trophy use defense or defence? It has been asserted without proof that the latter is used but everywhere I look I see the former spelling, including the only source used for this article. [1] --207.69.140.33 21:40, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- Everywhere I look that doesn't limit the explanation of the trophy to "top defenceman/defenseman", I find the following:
- "(T)o the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-around ability in the position."
- Not once have I seen it substitute defence for defense. In fact, putting the quoted text into a Google search finds 142 results with defense,[2] absolutely none with defence.[3]
Defense actually has sources backing it up and defence doesn't. For what it is worth, I still prefer a flexible style as far as which spellings to use for team and player articles. --Sparkhurst 06:04, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Articles should try to be standard for word spellings, otherwise one article could say "color", the next "colour" and so on and so forth. I originally had it the way it was spelt on the official website but when I discovered that the defenceman page was spelled with a c, I figured I might as well change it. -- Scorpion0422 06:09, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- The only reason defenseman (ice hockey) is not used instead of defenceman (ice hockey) is because the latter was created first. --Sparkhurst 06:12, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Regardless, it is the form that is used. -- Scorpion0422 06:14, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Not for American teams and apparently not on the Norris. The only thing we have to go by regarding the Norris is the quote above which in no case uses defence. --Sparkhurst 06:19, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Even TSN.ca doesn't change it. [4] --Sparkhurst 06:22, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- NHL.com just happens to be an American website, it doesn't mean that it's the spelling the trophy uses. And by the way, [5] -- Scorpion0422 06:23, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- I think TSN has more credibility than two fan sites. The Oilers fan site changed the spelling from the NHL.com source provided as well. --Sparkhurst 06:27, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

- Just so you know its not just cause defenceman (ice hockey) was created first. There was a big vote on it if you look at the talk page of that page. Pretty much everyone was against changing it. --Djsasso 12:56, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

If you look at the trophy in the HHOF, it's misspelled as "defanse," as can be seen here: http://i.imgur.com/H5cC8.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.16.198.165 (talk) 17:58, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
