Editing Project

Hello all! I am going to be making some organizational edits as part of an technical editing class. I am planing to work on a few things:

1. Archive old talk page.

The previous talk page had gotten extensively cluttered with peer reviews and proposed edits that never came into action. Archiving it cleans up the talk page and allows new editors to come in without feeling overwhelmed

2. Clean up equipment section.

I plan to move the historical components found in the equipment section into a new preceding section entitled "History". This helps organize the article into more discernible sections.

3. I plan to clean up the games section

The Table of Contents is cluttered with numerous games. To clean it up, I plan on removing Archery darts, Audio darts, Seventeen Skunk, Darf, and Ice Breaker. These sections contain no citations or have an article of their own. Additionally, I am going to try and merge Round the Clock, 20 to 1 and Around the world into one game labeled Around the world as they all appear to be variations of around the world. Finally, I am then going to try to create main articles for Killer, Moving Target, and Shanghi as they appear to have enough content for their own pages. TWJohn (talk) 01:33, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

4. I plan to clean up the Television section.

For a large section, it contains few citations overall (with 5 being in the same two line paragraph). Derivative articles like poker, bowling contain no television section so I am considering cutting it down significantly to match the relative format

5. I plan to clean up the betting section

The first paragraph contains archaic wording like "An apocryphal tale". Additionally, like the television section, derivative articles contain no betting section, so I might cut it down as well.

I think you're right in that the article needs attention, there are far too many alternative games without citations and a betting section probably isn't needed. I'm not sure how moving historical equipment into a new section would work because although it's historical, it's not entirely out of use. I would perhaps have a history section that talks more about the development of the game and merely notes that the equipment has also developed, and leave the development of a particular piece of equipment in its own section.

I would also cut down or rename some of the headings and change the order somewhat. I would probably start with the history section discussed above then move onto equipment. You could have sub-headings here for the dartboard and darts but I don't think a sections on lighting or the oche is required - just mention the board is usually illuminted and the throw takes place from a predetermined distance, when talking about the dartboard. The different distances used and the distance for women can be left for later.

Next, I think I'd have a section on play where I'd note the standard game of 501, discuss double in variations, talk about height of the board and distances from the oche, then have a sub-section for alternative games

Finish with a section on tournaments with different tournaments, governing bodies, tournament rules, champions and tables

These are all suggestions of course and sometimes as you edit, you discover that things you'd initially planned don't really work. So good luck. Two other things to think about: The article is in British English (coloured, fibres, centre, organisation etc) and with that in mind, perhaps it's better to keep the common British name of Round the Clock and put similar games under that heading. Secondly, putting something on the talk page and then editing the article less than a day later, is not really as per talk page discussion [[1]]

Thanks Ykraps! Your comments are incredibly helpful. I apologize for the initial quick deletion of a few of the un-cited games. Seeing that no other related sports articles contain a betting or television section, would you be opposed to me deleting them? TWJohn (talk) 15:54, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Attached below is a link to my sandbox for my draft of the new page. A lot of the formatting was lost during the copy editing so just look at the content and organization. I will respect the original format. I will finish my major edits by 06:00 7 March 2019. I will post my changes on 06:00 14 March 2019. Hey all, in addition to the edits mentioned above, I also removed the world champions table and list. The World Professional Darts Championship article (which I have left) contains all of that information and it seems redundant to repeat it in this article. Also, I made the games bold face instead of sub-headings in order to clean up the table of contents. Again these are just my proposed edits. Please look at the above posted sandbox and comment if you have any objections. If you do, I will adjust accordingly. Hi TWJohn, just a few things which you may or may not have already considered -

You don't need to change the sub-headings, you can limit the number visible in the table of contents by using one of the templates here. [[2]] It is better to keep the headings because they provide edit links and allow readers to choose to whether they want to view them or not.

You don't need to write a table of contents as it will be generated automatically.

The infobox needs to be formatted properly using the template here.[[3]] (or just copy from the current article)

You need to add some images, either from the current article or from commons.[[4]]

Most importantly, you need to replace the citations. Even if the links are dead, they are still valid.

You might also like to contact participants of the Darts Wikiproject here.[[5]]

I quite liked the table of world champions and I still think the article should at least mention current world champions but I'm not that precious so do what you think is best and if anyone else objects, we can discuss here again.--Ykraps (talk) 08:56, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

Hey Ykraps, Thank you for your suggestions! In regards to the TOC, infobox, citations and images, when I copied and pasted the article into my sandbox, that information was lost. Rest assured that when I implement my changes, I will not just copy and past my sandbox into the article. I will integrate the content of my sandbox into the article section by section without removing the article's original format (images, citations, etc.).

I will consider keeping the table of champions. My only concern is that the table and champions list takes up a lot of space in the article when the same information is displayed on the World Professional Darts Championship article. I personally do not think that that specific information belongs in a general article about Darts. Hopefully other people will respond and give their input in regards to the world champions table because I realize that removing the table is a big edit.TWJohn (talk) 07:24, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

I rather thought that's what you meant when you said "respecting the original format" but just making sure :). With regards to the table, as I said, I'm not precious but it does seem to be usual practice to discuss current champions in sport articles (see [[6]] for example), and a table seems like a convenient way to present the info. Where is electronic or soft tip darts ???? This article is written as if only steel darts is played. Soft darts world championhips: SDWC The World, IDF World Championship, SDWF World Championship (Compumatic), Soft Tip Bullshooter World Championship, IDF Darts World Cup, FECS World Championship. Safety Concerns

There have been instances of friends or couples playing with darts and hitting each other. In one of the horrific incidents, a woman asked her boyfriend to throw a dart above her head but it her eye instead. Terminology should be explained: double, triple, bull (is this the same as "bulls eye"?), flight, barrel, etc. And it should be consistent. (Is "treble" the same as "triple"?) 'dartists'

As a casual darts player in the UK I've never heard anybody call players 'dartists'. With such a prominent position in the opening paragraph, and a reference that dates from 1975, I question its priority and modern accuracy. 80.7.82.194 (talk) 19:16, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Darts games

Just a question... shouldn't there be an article for every common darts game itself as well? I mean, darts is not just darts, if people talk about darts it's commonly "501 darts" they're talking about, so an article such as 501 darts should be appropriate, just as every football code has their own articles.

The article 501 darts would include tactics (checkout rules of thumb and so on) just like the other sports do? 95.91.229.88 (talk) 02:02, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
