Shiner Bock as a "Lent" Beer"
[edit]Under Active Beers, we read "Bock was considered a lent beer, and therefore was only made around that season."
I might be splitting hairs here, but Bock Beer is considered a (month of) May beer. I've never heard it called Lentbier, Lentbock, or anything similar. I have commonly heard it called Maibock. Should we change it? Can anyone confirm the use of the term? --24.139.38.230 (talk) 02:36, 2 November 2009 (UTC)
Shiner (beer) Merger
[edit]I think it's a great idea. I've never been a big fan of each beer from a company having its own page, other than massive beers like Miller Lite or Bud. I'd much rather see ONE good article on Spoetzl and its beers than several sub-par articles. So, I vote yes on the merger.--Brownings 12:12, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
- I say we merge them, since no one else has chimed in. We'll then set Shiner (beer) to redirect to the Spoetzl page. I'll give it a few more days, but if we don't hear anything by the weekend, I'll start the merger. --Brownings 16:50, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- Merger now completed. --Brownings 17:05, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Photo request
[edit]I'm planning a trip to the brewery on the 23 of this month. I'll try to get a few photos and at least add some media to this bland article. Hopefully one day I'll get over here to actually add some content. --Brownings 16:59, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
- I visited the brewery yesterday. I've got a good dozen images to upload to Wikipedia for Shiner. I've got pics of the building, plus 4 postcards with older brewery and Kosmos pics. I'll try to get started uploading a couple this morning, then add more this evening hopefully. --Brownings 13:59, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Current Beers
[edit]Shouldn't '97' be included in the list of current beers(I suppose it would be 98 now that it's the new year)? On the same accord should a special section be made to discuss the yearly releases leading up to the 100th anniversary? --Robhakari 04:53, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Rob. Shiner 97 was on the list, but I took it off just last week or so. I scoured all of San Antonio looking for 3 or 4 cases of 97 for a holiday party. The thing is though, Shiner's anniversary brews have a very limited run. They start in late September and only run until mid-December. After finding no 97 at any store in SA, I contacted the only distributor for this area, GLI. Their records indicated they hadn't received any 97 since around the 13th of Dec, and every place they had distributed the beer to I had already called. So, in panic mode over the fear of being 97-less for the holidays I called the brewery. I can't remember the woman's name I spoke with, but she confirmed that the production of 97 had ended around the 15th. 97 won't become 98, it'll be a completely different beer, just like 97 was nothing like 96. 96 was a Märzen/Oktoberfest beer, and 97 was a Schwarzbier (black lager), so they were completely different beers. So far there has been no word on what 98 will be, but it won't be 96 or 97 just re-released. As for your suggestion on the section for the anniversary beers, yes, we do need one, but I've just been so busy working on the Pearl Brewing Company article, I just can't find the time to get over here. I've been hoping someone else would make the section, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen. --Brownings 14:44, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Perhaps we could move the info from Bocktoberfest to this article? Guroadrunner 09:02, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Wow, I didn't even know we had an article for Bocktoberfest. A merge might be the right answer. Then just redirect Bocktoberfest to the Spoetzl article. I vote yes for the merge. --Brownings 10:41, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Move completed, though the section could use a good cleanup. --Brownings 17:44, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Shiner 98
[edit]I've removed the claim that Shiner 98 will be produced as long as there is demand. I spoke with Marlene today who works at the brewery, customer service I beleive. She confirmed that 98 will be just like 96 and 97, it'll be sold for 3 or 4 months and then terminated. She wasn't sure as to why the normal Oct-Dec release which was used for 96 & 97 was changed to May-July(ish) for 98. Guess we'll never know on that one. --Brownings 17:52, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Plagiarized Content
[edit]Much of the history section appears to have been lifted directly and word-for-word from the footnoted page on the brewery's website. Is this acceptable, or should the content in question here be rewritten to some extent? Dunkelweizen 12:52, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- Anything that you believe is a direct copy should either be rewritten, or deleted all together. I'd be nice to see the history section actually expanded. For a company that's been around since 1909, Wikipedia sure does have a small amount of material. --Brownings 15:44, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
I've checked again, and for the most part, the history section is an abridged and occasionally lightly paraphrased reproduction of this website, beginning with section 4, "The Little Brewery in Shiner, Texas":
http://www.shiner.com/about/history.html
The terrible thing is that the "original" looks plagiarized, too, as it is filled with little footnote numbers but contains no actual references. This is sort of a rough problem, and I sort of wish I didn't discover it. Is anyone up for a little archival research? -- Dunkelweizen 16:01, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
- I hear ya Dunkelweizen. Sometimes I think to myself, crap, why did I find that, now I've gotta fix it. Honestly, fixing this article has been on my list of things to do forever. Unforuntatly, it can never seem to make it above #5 in priority of Wiki articles. I wouldn't mind helping on any effort to clean things up. --Brownings 16:45, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
- Shiner recently (Dec 2008) released a history/picture book for their 100 anniversary. I plan on going though the history section and cleaning it up some. I'm in no way going to cover everything, just make it look and flow better than it does now. --Brownings (talk) 14:21, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
States available
[edit]I couldn't tell from the history whether this is already reflected in the number shown, but Shiner is now (finally) available in Indiana. Lambertman (talk) 16:00, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if it mentions the number of states or not. I know that it doesn't mention a list of states, that's for sure. Shiner has been growing the last few years. The popularity of Shiner Bock with many in the South/South West has really rocketed it all over the map. I think Gambrinus is really pushing Shiner as one of their higher priority products. Bock is getting all over the place, but Shiner's other beers are still pretty limited. Hopefully everyone will be able to enjoy the others soon. --Brownings (talk) 19:09, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Holiday Cheer
[edit]Holiday Cheer is out, and available at most HEBs in south Texas. I picked up a case this evening, and about 7 or 8 are gone already. I'll be updating the article with additional information and a new photo tomorrow. --Brownings (talk) 01:46, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Iron Chef America
[edit]The Shiner Hefeweizen was featured recently on Iron Chef America, as part of a Beer Battle. Should this be included? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.117.107.182 (talk) 04:01, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
- It would be cool if we could work it into the body somehow. Perhaps work it into an area about the increased popularity of Shiner's brands. If you want to give it a shot, feel free. On a side note, Shiner now has a coffee table book out called "Shine On." It covers the history of the town and the history of brewery. I hope to get an update out to this article this weekend that includes info on the book. --Brownings (talk) 14:01, 26 December 2008 (UTC)
Shiner 100
[edit]Shiner 100 is out now. Pictures and updated information coming in the next couple of days. --Brownings (talk) 23:02, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
- The picture and information is up. I'll soon be adding info on Shiner's other celebration effort. Shiner plans on refreshing the labels of a couple of its other beers (Bock is already done and out). The refresh won't be a major overhaul like they were back in 2002/2003, rather just a change in font and colors. All beers will get a 100 Anniversary neck label for 2009. The new Bock has it and I've also seen Black and Blonde with the new neck labels. --Brownings (talk) 19:15, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
History revamp
[edit]A major overhaul of the history section is in the works. I'm going to try and reorganize everything that's there plus add on to it. As discussed above, the current content it basically copy and pasted from another site. If you have any inputs, let's hear them now. --Brownings (talk) 20:57, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
What State Is It Not In
[edit]It'd be easier to say that it's available in every state (except XXXXX), than to just say it's in 49 states. Which one is the odd duck out? Is it Utah? Or could it be Hawaii? Inquiring minds want to know!!! -129.29.211.115 (talk) 20:29, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
